A NEW BUILDING
The Arc of Hilo is building a 17,600 square foot Community and Training Center in Hilo that will improve our ability to serve the developmentally and other disabled on Hawai‘i Island.

The new Community and Training Center will be a 13,100 sq/ft classroom and office center with a 4,500 sq/ft auditorium/gym. This will adjoin the present Arc of Hilo Employment Training Center. A walking path will provide pleasant outdoor experience around the grounds.
The new complex will include:
- 6 classrooms/assembly areas
- Music and arts rooms
- Auditorium/Gym with portable stage
- Instructional kitchen
- Computer lab instruction area
- 12 offices
- Records storage
- Accessible restrooms
- Reception area
- Future therapeutic pool support facilities
Why We Need More Space
The present building where The Arc of Hilo has been located for more than 25 years is shared between the Client Support Services, Employment Training Services, and the Administrative Services. Yet, in last five years, the client base has almost tripled and we experienced a 400% increase in staff size. With the new space we will double the number of workers from 230 to 459. The proposed facility will allow us to expand The Arc of Hilo’s services and allow for a greater public involvement in our programming.
With Our New Community and Training Center, The Arc Can:
- Expand the Adult Day Health program
- Expand education, training and client support
- Promote a community arts, choir and music program
- Train clients and staff in a new Computer Lab
- Diversify the employment program beyond Janitorial, Nursery, Laundry, Grounds Keeping, and the HI5 Redemption Center programs
- Provide a stronger emphasis on health and fitness
- Develop after school programs for Special Needs students & others
- Provide meeting/activity space for community groups such as Special Olympics, Veterans groups, and others
- Partner with Kiwanis Club to form an Aktion Club
- Partner with other non-profit agencies
- Plan for a future therapeutic swimming pool
